There are a few ways to make the trip, but not all are created equal. Here’s a breakdown of the main options:

By Tour – The Most Hassle-Free Option

If you want a stress-free, well-organised, and genuinely enjoyable experience, doing a tour is hands-down the best way to go.

We went with Paris City Vision, one of the most reputable tour companies in the city - and they made everything incredibly smooth from start to finish.

The tour departs from a convenient central meeting point near the Eiffel Tower, and the journey is made comfortable with scheduled stops along the way for food and toilet breaks - a welcome relief on such a long drive. Once we arrived, there was more than enough time to explore Mont-Saint-Michel at a leisurely pace.

We wandered through its winding medieval streets, soaked in the views, did some souvenir shopping, and visited the Abbey without ever feeling rushed. The return to Paris was well timed too - we were back around 9:30pm, which is impressive considering the site is over four hours from the city.

Our guide was incredibly friendly and shared interesting insights about the island during the drive, with the option to use an audio guide for further information. The tour also included entry to the Abbey, which made things even easier. Overall, the experience was efficient, relaxing, and allowed us to simply enjoy the day without worrying about any logistics.

Unless you're planning an overnight stay or visiting other Normandy towns on the way, we wouldn’t recommend this for a day trip. It’s a big commitment, and fatigue is almost guaranteed.

By Public Transport

If you’re determined and organised, you can reach Mont-Saint-Michel via a combination of trains and buses. Typically, this involves:

• Train from Paris to Rennes or Pontorson

• Connecting bus to Mont-Saint-Michel

• Walk or shuttle from the drop-off point to the island

While it’s technically possible as a day trip, it requires early starts, precise timing, and little room for error. It can also be more expensive and complicated than a tour. We’d only recommend this option for seasoned travellers or those staying overnight nearby.

Let’s be honest: it’s a long day. You’re looking at around 14–15 hours total, including travel time. That can be draining, especially if you’re short on sleep or energy.

But the good news? You can sleep on the bus. In fact, we caught a few naps on the way there and back, which made a huge difference.

If you’re prepared for a big day out - and maybe plan a quieter following morning - then the payoff is totally worth it.

Absolutely, 100% yes.

Mont-Saint-Michel was a major highlight of our France trip. It’s every bit as spectacular as the photos, and we left feeling inspired, energised, and full of unforgettable memories (and a camera roll to match!).
